Exploring Kathak Dance as a Medium of Political Expression in Post-Independence India
Main Article Content
Abstract
This paper examines the evolution of Kathak dance in post-independence India as a medium of
political expression. Kathak, traditionally a classical dance form from North India, has
undergone significant transformation in the contemporary era, particularly as a platform for
articulating political and social issues. The study traces the role of Kathak from its roots in
temple rituals to its modern-day adaptation in expressing socio-political realities. Through an
exploration of key performances, choreographers, and political contexts, this paper aims to
uncover the intricate relationship between Kathak dance and political expression, highlighting
how the art form has been used to comment on issues such as nationalism, social justice, and
identity in post-independence India.
