Abstract

The twentieth century witnessed significant transformations in the performing arts across the
globe, particularly in the context of colonial legacies and global cultural exchange. This paper
examines the influence of Western theatre on Indian performing arts during the 20th century,
focusing on how mimicry and adaptation played key roles in the evolution of Indian theatre.
While the interaction between Indian and Western theatrical traditions was initially marked by
colonial imposition, over time it resulted in a unique blend of both traditions. This study explores
these influences through key historical events, the development of new forms of performance,
and the ways in which Indian theatre practitioners negotiated Western techniques while
preserving cultural specificity. The paper also addresses how Western theatre practices were
adapted in both mainstream and alternative theatre spaces in India.
